I think they took advantage of the TNF1 expression that is restricted to excitatory neurons of the dorsal subiculum in order to identify them. Yet I am mostly interested in driving the expression of some proteins in CA1 pyramidal neurons.

As a general interest I found that driving the expression using the CamKII 0.4 small promoter has 95% accuracy compared to the longer version.

Yes, you are right. But if you look at Figure 1B, you can see a sharp distinction between dSub (FN1-Cre dependent YFP expression) and dCA1 (WFS1 expression). Besides, WFS1 expression is restricted to CA1 layer.
