Can someone please help to me with this. I am finding it very difficult to freeze on it as I do not have a specialized resource person to guide in this matter in our department.
In theory, all 3 methods should be suitable to give you nano-sized cerium oxide based powders. I have tried hydrothermal synthesis with microwave assisted heating, which was working perfect:

Although, as Rainer has already said, all 3 methods are effective to obtain nano cerium oxide, probably, as far as I know, hydrothermal method is an effective way to control the size of the powders by controlling temperature, concentration, solvents...Try to check this work:

the choice of the method highly depends on what's your goal and what's the equipment you have!
We have done some synthesis via sol-gel and the actetylacetonate route. Probably not the cheapest but we have spherical grains, high reproducibility and a reasonably narrow size distribution:

I have used glycine-nitrite combustion synthesis to impregnate cerium oxide nanoparticles into carbon aerogel matrix. The same method can also be used for the synthesis of cerium oxide particles alone, The method has advantage of producing uniform metal oxide nanoparticles with narrow size distribution, as rapid combustion (which lasts only few 100 ms) doesn't allow particles to diffuse into bigger particles. This method is also cost effective as you just need cheaper salts as precursor materials. From my experience, heat treatment at 600oC in inert atmosphere is necessary to form crystalline nanoparticles of size ~ 2-5 nm, after combustion.
