I am a novice at simulation but I am very eager to learn it. I am dealing with nanoindentation and scratch testing of nanocomposite thin films. I was wondering If simulating nanoindentation would lead to a better understanding of stress distribution during testing (same goes for scratch adhesion test). Can anyone suggest where I could start from ? Any help or advice would be much appreciated !!
Hi,,, Nanoindenr´taion and scratch tests are two different characterization methods, Nanoindentation deals with the mechanical properties of the coatings whereas scratch testing gives you details about the adhesion behavior of coatings.
In case of simulations, you would be able to understand the effect of indention for both the cases but you know that there are many assumptions when you are making a model. One of my student did these simulations with ABAQUS (LS Dyna). He was able to show clear effects(Stress distribution and deformation) for single and multilayer coatings. I beleieve that these simulation softwares cannot provide ideal stress distributions for a single system but they can be helpful to understand the relative behavior between different coatings.
Abaqus is a good tool for nanoindnetaiton simulation. However, it is always preferable to do some nanoindentation experiments prior to simulation.

I think that any Finite Element code can be used to simulate nanoindentation or scratch tests provided that it proposes adequate material models. I invite you to look at the RG page of Guillaume Kermouche who was my PhD student and is now professor at the school of Mines of Saint-Etienne who made a lot of simulations of this type.
