I am convinced of the importance of taking into account recent advances in cognitive science, specifically embodied/enactive cognition, so that literary analysis may form part of a wider discussion regarding essential aspects of human experience. I don't know much about digital humanities, but there may be methods in that direction that could be useful for your project. I say this because Franco Moretti has done work in that area as well as looking into the larger question of what constitutes "world literature": https://newleftreview.org/issues/II1/articles/franco-moretti-conjectures-on-world-literature. I'm not sure if both of those projects are related, but they might be!

The world literature discussion is really where I'm interested in, although I'm looking at it more as a model for understanding global pop music rather than literary texts per se. Hi Marie--Am Lit is very rich in this as a "nation of immigrants" (JFK)--from The Jingle by Upton Sinclair in 1906 (Hungarians in meat factories) to How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent (1991) required in LA schools in the 1990s, there's lots of content. Whitman and Sandburg's poem. I charted a 3-step process in the North American experience in a paper I did for ACSUS on the Cdn/US West I could send you if you have professional e-mail and this doesn't work--see page 16 for the nub of immigrant nostalgia--suggested steps, first disorientation (the prairies in My Antonia), to orientation (House on Mango St) to reorientation (the Godfather)...just suggestions but the subject is rich indeed.

Sometimes methods and theories are confused in literature, however there are many theories one can adopt. The best guide is the content because it dictates the point of reference, does it need a psychoanalytical toosl, feminist, structuralist (many variations); post-structuralsit (many variation). author oriented, text-oriented or reader oriented theories, marxist, afrocentric, postcolonial ? It is your orientation and the text which determine your methods and theories

This is not a full response, but in the lead-up to writing the article on a literary work, it is terribly important to read the book (or books) thoroughly several times, because a first and even second reading doesn't necessarily reveal the undercurrents/philosophical themes. For example, is it allegorical in nature? What about intertextuality? ETC. Take copious notes, and quote extensively to support your argument about the book/s you're writing.

Migration and Literature have been deliberated upon by many writers and critics in the post-colonial and post-Modern context. Unless we bring in the class-caste-race-gender or other such perspectives, there is a chance of being highly generic in such narratives.

Despite doing discourse analysis, stylistic analysis is better. And the model of H.G.Widowson is recommended. Moreover, syntactic analysis could also be used.

Depends really what you want to show, different methods have different restrictions. Some are text-centred (stylistics, rhetorics, close-reading), some are embedding the text within societies (discourse analysis, for instance, and theories that are integrating text-centred questions with social questions like semiotics, narratology, postcolonial, feminist, translation studies).

Your work lies between sociolinguistics and discourse analysis ( ideology/ power). I suggest you consider the work of van Dijk, van Leeuwen, and Fairclough among many others.

Maria Luisa Di Martino , have you ever heard of Imagology and literary imagotypes? I have first heard about this approach in 2015 when I met Prof. Maria João Simões (University of Coimbra, Portugal). Well, this theoretical approach is not new - it was definitely new for me by that time - and I think it can be an interesting tool for all those who are studying migration/immigration literature.

It is very difficult to choose one method. In my opinion, it depends, first of all, on the kind of text we have to study/explain and the special purposes of the text and of our analysis.

It also depends on your purposes of demonstration. The causes of migration: Marxist theory, world-system theory, globalization studies, and, as you said, imperialism as a discourse of hegemony. The effects of migration: Deconstruction theory, hybridity theory, theory of the nation, psychoanalysis. These are all illuminating tools and ones I constantly use in my own investigations.
