Xylene is used as a solvent in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. Which is the best and economical way of Xylene disposal? Is there any industrial waste management protocol for Xylene disposal?
Burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber but exert extra care in igniting as this material is highly flammable. Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company. Contact a licensed professional waste disposal service to dispose of this material; Contaminated packaging: Dispose of as unused product.
As all BTEX substances, xylene can be biodegraded in both anaerobic and aerobic biofilters. You can also feed it in a correctly adapted biogas digester. The activated sludge wastewater treatment technology should be able to deal with it, too. But I would not recommend it because of
- the probable volatilization and
- the very short hydraulic retention time.
The best would be to pre-treat the polluted wastewater right at the source, with one of the anaerobic methods. (Biofilter of biogas fermentor.)
You can also find literature on removing BTEX pollution by the rhizosphere in constructed wetlands.
