Recently, I have analysed my results of life table parameters of an insect using jacknife procedure. I have also come across papers analysing same results using bootstrap. I want to know which is more reliable, bootstrap or jacknife?
Both of these resampling techniques can be used depending on sample types. In Jackknife, resampling is done by taking and deleting sample data; whereas, Bootstrap value is obtained by taking sample data repeatedly. It results in different Bootstrap values for same number of replicates, but single Jackknife value for specific number of replicates. So, Bootstrap is more efficient for getting variances. But, in Jackknife one gets larger variances than Bootstrap. In addition, as Jacckinfe is based on deleting sample data, in case of two sex life table, it can produce chaotic results as individual male data would get deleted and net reprodutcive rate would be zero. So, in case of two sex life table, Bootstrap would be better to get normally distributed results. Decide accordingly. Good luck!
