Interesting question. I have a feeling this will come down to personality and field. Then again, there is also the matter of funding, which may limit the decision for academics.
Some people really enjoy particular elements of their research and will naturally end up narrowing their focus.
Some fields are very interdisciplinary and will require a breadth of knowledge to make any progress. For emerging fields, knowledge from a range of different fields could be incredibly valuable.
I suppose it depends on individual abilities and preferences. Some may want to concentrate on one area and study it elaborately which others would prefer to concentrate on more than one field. Personally, I think it is a good idea to be good in more than one field as there is a natural link between many subjects.
As Giddeon mentioned it really depends on the individuals ability and preferences. But for example in my case I've focused heavily on what I really love (microscopy) but then also gain expertise in all the areas I see that would support my microscopy. So cell culture, staining, image processing, data management,. They are skills in demand in their own right, provide opportunities for collaboration but also make my microscopy data better.
I wouldn't go to far out from that though as I'd always want all my skills to have some relevance to one another.

I agree with Hany Kasban. I believe that the consolidation of all intellectual efforts in a single area will make important and rapid progress. But this also requires familiarity with many of the relevant issues that maximize these efforts.
