I have come across differences of opinion. Somewhere I have received this suggestion that a one-tailed test should be used for a clear directional hypothesis, whereas some reviewers have opined for a two-tailed hypothesis in the same situation. I request the research fraternity for clear guidelines with some references and rationale.

If there is truly no possible way the outcome could go in both directions then a one-tailed test might be appropriate and provides greater statistical power. If there is any possibility for the direction of change or relationship to be in both directions then a two-tailed test is more appropriate.
