The field-orientation control is the most effective method that control the AC motor speed to get better performance. The FOC method is used to control the velocity of LIM because the control characteristics is more complicated compare with speed control of RIM, and motor parameters are always varying under the normal running conditions due to end effect.

In my opinion it depends on the approach you want to use. Normally, the Direct-FOC requires speed sensors and/or resolvers to make it work. This is in contrast to the IFOC approach where the speed and rotor orientation is estimated using an observer. Ideally, the IFOC approach might give better performance as the observer has inherent filtering property and measurements generated from this block should be better compared to the sensor measurements. However, its a question of open discussion because designing the observer requires some approximations, and it might not fully cover the actual system dynamics.

It is axiomatic that more sensors can provide more realistic feed-backs for your control systems and more desirable response as a result. Therefore, if the precision is an important factor in your system, you need to use direct-FOC methods to have a better controller. However, you can simply use low-cost indirect-FOC to drive your electric machine when the precision has no determinative role in the system. In actuality, the flux, speed, and torque estimations result in lower accuracy in system operation.
