I use the term as a clinician cyber compulsion. Addiction is an inappropriate description as it is a misnomer. It does not impact brain structure/function as does psychoactive substances. It does not create acute Organic Brain Syndrome, and certainly not persisting OBS.
I feel that internet use disorder would be best suited for an addition to the DSM. In layman's terms, internet addiction is the most relatable and readable. This is for cases where one may use the term alcoholic to refer to one with an alcohol use disorder.
Could these terms maybe be too vauge? i would think more the term 'Internet abuse symptoms'...and then more of a detailed descriptive guidance as too what that could entail...For example in the DMS 5 Depression could be called Depression symptoms ... ect ect ...Interested to know your thoughts.
Regarding the term best is what you used "internet addiction" or Internat gaming disorder, digital addiction". The latest version of DSM-V used the terms regarding addiction and the upcoming ICD-11 may also use the same terms.
The best is "Internet Addiction" or "Internet Addiction Disorder" -they are interchangeable-, as this is stated by the APA, the DSM (especially the "5") and the WHO itself: "Internet addiction can be defined as an extreme form in which this phenomenon manifests itself. It is an impulse control problem, characterized by the inability to abstain or moderate its use ".In any case, it is included within the General Group of "Addictions without substances".
Additionally, there is disagreement over whether pathological internet usage can be considered an unique entity or should be separated from pathological use of particular activities such as online gaming and pornographic website viewing.
