Sinkholes and subsidence in the Dead Sea area. Earthquakes globally as they are the most sudden and least predictable with potential disastrous effects from Tsunamis and far reaching nuclear power plants catastrophes and contaminations like ”Fukushima“ .
Monsoon rainfalls in Pakistan every year brings a lot of landslides in mountainous areas in northern part of the country and decadal recurrence of flood hazards also a big cause of disaster while unusual earthquake hazards prevail after a long interval.
Because of their frequent recurrence, floods have been causing more damage globally as well as in Pakistan than other types of natural disasters, including earthquakes.
There have been nine or ten earthquakes in the world, each one of which killed over 200,000 people. The maximum death toll (830,000) is attached to 1556 China earthquake. Cumulative deaths, however, have been more in the case of floods. Two of the worst cases occurred in China-- estimated loss of life at 1-2 million in 1987 floods and 1-4 million in 1931 floods. If you add to these the deaths related to tropical cyclones, hurricanes and tornadoes, the number (and the damage) gets much higher. The 1970 cyclone in Bay of Bengal (mainly the present day Bangladesh) killed half a million people.
Pakistan has been punished regularly by floods and the 2010 floods caused an estimated damage of US $43 billion. On the human side, however, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake killed over 75,000 people and caused severe emotional misery.
