I recommend studying fundamental structural geology if you are interested in a career that contributes to the "energy transition". There will be an interesting evolution in drilling technology from the current applications used for oil and gas to widespread development of geothermal energy. One of the most important near-term problems is understanding how drilling operations affect induced seismicity.
