I am doing research on the impact of having women leaders in the newsroom to female representation in the news. Do you know of any feminist theories that can be cited for my thesis?
There’s a body of theory from the political science literature about the relationship between symbolic representation (having women present as representatives, managers, leaders etc. – sometimes known as descriptive representation) and substantive representation (advancing women’s interests in policy, politics, professional work, agenda-setting) that could be applied.
I’ve listed some key references below that I hope might be helpful.
Kind regards,

I think you will need to cite most feminist theories and analyze their approach to the question. Are you looking for empirical studies or theoretical approaches?
Hi..In political representation theory there are few types of representation - substantive. descriptive, gyroscopic and surrogacy. Scholars such as Phillips, Mansbridge, Azza Karam and few authors mentioned by Paul.
I think it is liberal feminist interpretation that seeing a women in newsroom as representing women in a progressive manner.
Socialist feminist view is in my view relevant even today- do the women in newsroom represent the interest of well off or marginalised women? Women who are upper Castes/Whites or Dalits/Blacks? Majorities or minority women. Which channel are they sitting in-prostatus quo or alternative. Only when they represent the interest of marginalised women can they play a transformative role
Me complace enviarle la referencia de un paper publicado en la Revista Latina de Comunicación sobre la representación de las mujeres científicas en la prensa española. Este trabajo se realiza desde el punto de vista de las ciencias de la información.
