In arable farming regions sugar beets can be a preferred habitat for the Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). Preliminary results suggest that hatching success is quite high. However, chick survival seems to be rather low. We hypothese that insufficient fodder supply for the chicks is the cause.

In an applied research project we intend to test cost efficient ways to improve the habitat quality for the Lapwing. Does anyone has information how the abundance of arthropods living on or near the surface in sugar beet fields can be increased? The relevant period is in particular spring (May-End of June). And how high these densities are in comparison e.g. to an annual fallow?
