I have looked at lots of CATS e.g. CASP, GRADE etc etc.
Which one is best suited to research in the field of education? I wan to assess quality of studies I am reviewing. Can you use EPPI reviewer for this or NVIVO?
and other tools used in preparing systematic reviews and meta-analysis for Cochrane are useful, such as:
- Archie
- Convidence
- GRADEpro GDT
- RevMan 5
These tools are helpful, but each one is used for a particular function to help in processing data and to write a systematic review for Cochrane.
In medical and health sciences education to assess the quality of research we used "the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI). The instrument comprises 10 items in six domains: study design, sampling method (number of institutes and response rate), type of data, the validity of the evaluation instrument, data analysis, and outcomes. For each domain, the maximum score is 3, and the total possible MERSQI score is 18 with a range of 5–18. The tool was created by Reed et al. (2007).
Reed DA, Cook DA, Beckman TJ, Levine RB, Kern DE, Wright SM. Association between funding and quality of published medical education research. J Am Med Assoc 2007;298(9): 1002–1009.
We have used the tool in one of our recent articles titled,
"3D Anatomy Models and Impact on Learning: A Review of the Quality of the Literature" (see the link)
