Which books should researchers read on the side besides academia related materials?
Read the opposites of what the researchers normally read e.g. if a researcher is always engage in technical / academia research e.g. in pure science, applied science, ICT etc. research, s/he should read books / materials related to social science, psychology, history, novel, religious scripture etc. i.e. something very different from his / her area of interest. Reason being this can:
generate new ideas / inspirations on how to perform the current research better - as the researcher might see things differently / see from different perspectives.
cultivate lateral or T-shape thinking instead of vertical thinking that what the researcher is doing now by focusing only on his / her area of research.
take the researcher's mind off from focusing on current research especially when s/he is facing roadblocks in his / her research - reading the opposites can / might help de-stress / re-charge his / her energy.
enhance the researcher's general knowledge - as many prominent researchers read widely,
help the researcher to discover his / her new interest(s) in life.
