I'm working on an article about pandemics and want to use philosophers for an understanding the cultural context of a given phenomenon. I don't know how to justify that in my "Methods" section. Maybe you know about authors who claim that philosophers could really help with understanding complex social issues. Who treat philosophers' works not from the philosophical standpoint, but as a valuable source of information about contemporary society?

Thank you, Stephen I. Ternyik! But what about non-philosophers who use philosophers to get from them some cultural context for understanding social issues? The reason my question was asked is that I didn’t find particular works in which philosophers were praised for their indispensable role in clearing things out about a particular issue, say, plague in England or coronavirus pandemics. Roughly speaking, I want to find somebody who said: “Yes, you should read philosophers who write about social issues, because they are a crucial source of information, of the cultural milieu and understanding of social and cultural significance of plague, coronavirus pandemics and so on. And here I explain why philosophers are so important: 1. …, 2. …, 3. …”.
Illia Ilin Some managers are maybe influenced by certain philosophers, but not in your 1,2,3 scheme. I know for sure that Alan Greenspan was influenced by Ayn Rand; so, Ayn Rand could make a point here. In my humble opinion, it works the following way: certain ideas are picked out from practitioners , i.e. T.Herzl had read Nietzsche intensively and especially adopted the idea of ‚neue Selbsterschaffung‘ (new self-creation). I guess, you will detect something like selective application of ideas by practitioners in human history.
