Confucius' Analects (论语). It influences the culture, philosophy and day-to-day life of Chinese. In fact, not only Chinese, Korean and Japanese and now Western cultures as well.
Next will be Lao Zhi's Tao Te Ching that influenced the Asian perspectives of nature and universe.
Jing Gang Jing from Buddhism has significant impact to Chinese culture too.
In my view, Chinese history and culture are very much influenced by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism (儒道释). The three different philosophies have been integreted and merged into one unique Chinese culture and affect the day-to-day life throughout history.
No, Confucisanism, Taoism and Buddhism (fundamental) should be considered as philiosophy not religion. Some people might have different opinion about Buddhism.
Religion is a set of beliefs about existence, meaning of life, governing of nature & universe, moral & ethic, rituals and Creator. In religion, faith has higher prority over human logic. Most importantly, the truth is originated from Creator not human being. For example, Christian believes that bible is the inspired words of God and not written by men. Thus, men are just the tools to write down God's words in the bible.
In contrast, the articles or books from Confucisanism, Taoism and Buddhism are written by human beings from the past collective wisdom.
However, both religion and philiosphy affect and change human's thinking and ways of life.
Both teaches what the rights and wrongs are in life.
well, I got it. You are so good at chinese ancient philosophy.
Although Confucisanism, Taoism and Buddhism are the intelligence set deriving from long historical experience and the domains biased towards difference, to some extent, they are almost for government's domination.
As the relationships/rules between Monarch and his subjects, fathers and children, husband and wife in Confucisanism, it was proposed for government to better control the kingdom steady.
I want to ask some questions about management science because of my major[Industrial Engineering] and my interest.
In ancient china, period before Qin Dynasty, people as Xunzi[荀子]、Hanfeizi[韩非子]、Mozi[墨子] etc. had gave us some famous managment science. Unfortunately, we have lost the continual research on these topic. Why does the western world management science[as Quantitative Analysis, experimental reason] dominate project management, social management, organization management and so on?
Confucisanism proposes stability and prosperity start from individual then family and finally the country. 正心、修身、齐家、治国、平天下
For Taoism, if everybody follows the nature and understand rights from wrongs, it is not necessary to have rules in place to control the people. 无为而治
Next level will be Buddhism and is tougher, one has to be enlightened, remove the earthly lusts and troubles and break away from the rebirth cycle.
About the western management science dominating the world, I believe there are few reasons:
- Diffusion of western concepts through Christianity evangelization
- Influence during British Colonization period
- Exporting of western concepts during world war I & II
- Industrial revolution
- Modern Globalisation
Above are the external factors. Internally, China throughout history has seldom proactively exporting ancient Chinese philosophy and science outside of the country.
However, the Great Wall was built before all the engineering and management theories exist. Evidence of advanced project management and engineering concepts in ancient Chinese.
Next question we need to ponder is whether the current western management science is relevant to bring us into next century. Looking at the Global Financial Crisis, Corporate governance issues, greediness of senior executives, global warming, property bubble etc, are there some deficiencies in the contemporary management science?
Perhaps we should introduce anicent Chinese philosophy into modern management science for future sustainability. Here are three suggested concepts:
- Focus on the people. Every large organization is made up of individual employees. Everybody has the same goals aligned with the organization. (以人为本)
- Focus on peace and stability. Balance the conflicts and risks. Agree to disgree. (以和为贵)
- Ethnic takes precedence. Ethnic and moral should be the most important aspect in choosing the leaders. It is a good way to prevent corruptions from senior executives by establishing ethnical norms. (以德为先)
I quite agree with Xun Zi (荀子) that human being is naturally inclined towards selfishness especially the person is in power. Therefore, we need to nurture ethnic and moral values to all people when they are young.
I think it will be an interesting research topic:
