Academic staffs, as researchers or teachers, are key leaders to the development of each society. So, they all should know:
1- What are the main duties of an academic staff?
2- How can an academic staff be more useful for his/her society?
1. Do or lead research and sucessfully produce higher degree candidates, upgrade curriculum and lecture, do administration associated with these. Advance yourself.
2. Help the community in the broad sense of that concept.

I have seen this thread so late. Here is my response dear @Abdulvahed. It is a bit hard to give an answer after my friends @Ian and @Raoof!
I would say that the role of academician, professor or researcher, is to produce BETTER academicians than he is. Only then his academic career is fully done!

In addition to what suggested by fine responses above, I can think of the followings:
1- teach effectively to help students succeed academically
2-lead practical research projects which is beneficial to the society if possible.
A great point given by dear Prof. Ljubomir Jacić "I would say that the role of academician, professor or researcher, is to produce BETTER academic than he is ".Which indicates that the main activity is teaching which involves (teaching of knowledge,teaching the scientific way of thinking, teaching of how to conduct research, teaching positive attitudes to different life situations, teaching ethics & anything constructive towards builiding BETTER human being).
No one of us is eternal, so my "age mates" & I hope that those who will continue after us are very good "substitutes" of us.
