Is the future of humanity not on planets, but on or in space stations? Why go down deep gravity wells when the necessary resources exist in asteroids? Are we looking in the wrong place for extra-terrestrial intelligence (no down gravity wells, but between stars). Instead of trying to land on planets, we should be spending our research money to examining the asteroid belt.
Overcoming gravity is essential in approaching asteroids. Too much effort is wasted in accepting limitations of lift and acceleration. Bending of space time leads to future of exploration.
Human potential is not being achieved, lagging many decades for reasons other than mechanics of science and engineering. Machines will be available for travel in space and time when human society is sufficiently advanced to embrace the obligations that go with such power. Time travel and star travel are of the same difficulty, requiring the same energy, and will be achieved at the same time with the same equipment and same people.
Asteroids will be useful but not confining. Life on planets has enormous advantages when the technology is advanced. There is strong ideological resistance to leaving Earth, in hopes that the home world will be given better care.
Intelligence is debatable, even after passing tests and building machines. Years ago I turned attention to study of space and time with conclusions that opportunities go neglected in public research, while much is done in private hopes of owning the discoveries. Some people will have the machines and others will not.

Earth and the planets come from asteroids. Humanity doesn't know enough, but I suspect all we need can be found in asteroids. Secondly, the "spaceship" may be a hollowed-out asteroid with a central core of a hydrogen fusion device and a protected skin of a few miles of rock. We know more of life on a planet. We need to know more about asteroids.
Few weeks ago it was published in news papers that American pilot, while moving from one airport to another airport, saw one bright, superluminous round shape object flying in the airspace. Collision somehow avoided but physically that object was seen by pilot. This means something is there that was operated by technically developed (than our present technology) intelligence. Their location definitely far away from our known places so far we have searched. i.e may be within our solar system. This means that the place may be within the area covered by farthest planets. In my opinion exact location although not yet known but will be within our solar system.

Regarding spaceship with central core of hydrogen fusion device-----main problem will be to control the device i.e. to cool the device by releasing generated / produced heat during reaction. In earth sea water can be used to cool the device. In spaceship this mechanism will not work. so, by change unable to control the heat, the spaceship will totally blast off. Controlling the device
is not a easy job. This is the main unsolved problem.
Regarding origin of life ----- definitely some clues are hidden in asteroids. Origin of life and its gradual development are so complex
that development processes may be explainable but to match that with the origin of life is almost impossible. Just like origin of the universe---- scientists have tried to match the present observation scenarios so that they can get some clues or model such as bigbang theory, expanding universe theory, a Big Cranch, cycling universe, so, so . But the main unsolved question is ---when and how the first BigBang was initiated before cycling ?, what was the condition at that time which compelled to initiate the point like condensed whole universe to do so. We have to search the answer of this question (?) first and then we can acquire the clues what was the origin of the universe ( ?)

The Earth currently has a nuclear reactor at the center. The heat it generates helps heat the Earth. The Earth is a spaceship. If humanity is to travel between the stars, it will need to house several thousand, if not millions, of people and it will have to travel for generations. So, maybe a small moon size with an outer skin of a few miles of rock and a central core of a few miles of rock holding a reactor or where hydrogen bombs are explodes occasionally.
I like Hoyle's transpermia where earlier life planets were exploded by Nova. Origin stories abound. The Big Bang has several problems. The Quasi Steady State Cosmology solves some of them. My STOE solves more.
The core of our Earth contains heated, molten materials ( as a proof we observe molten, heated liquid existed as lava from exploded mountain in Italy, Indonesia, etc. The material is super-heated causing the earth is still heated. Man made nuclear reactor i.e. FISSION is a active . But man made FUSION reactor is still at primary stage. For space travel we need Fusion reactor for generation of energy as well as easier to carry.
As per your idea and in my opinion definitely space ship will have to carry a fusion reactor for required energy to travel month after month , even year after year. That type of technology we don't have now but may be invented in future.
Based on observational evidences different models such as Big-bang, Steady State, other models have been developed . Bigbang model gives required answer nearly 50-60% . Rest remains as unanswered. For example---- why does Big-bang explosion occur (?), what was the situation before Big-bang (?) source of this explosion (?) that can create such super-explosion etc.
So far my knowledge fission type reactor ( radio-active type material use) mechanism is working in the interior of our Earth. But that material is limited. (NOT FUSION type that we require for space travel)
