Currently I am searching for a WMS-source of the global surface that I can implement to QGIS.
We are writing on a paper and need a map showing an overview of the landscape, especially the mountains, of Europe and Asia. Our map shall show some shaded relief ore something similar of the northern hemisphere.
I searched the internet for the last hour and found several WMS-websites, but most did not answer, and none of the functioning can provide, what I am looking for.
Can anyone help me?

have you tried some of the layers available in the QGIS OpenLayers plugin? The OCM Landscape (inside the OSM one) could maybe fit your purpose. The Google physical layer would be perfect but the licensing and use constraints are not...
Otherwise you could consider to use raster data such as the one available on the Natural Earth portal (http://www.naturalearthdata.com/features/) in particular Natural Earth 1 or 2, available in two reference scales (1:10 and 1:50 m).

you can try to download from the site of Esri (arcgis.com) a base map of Europe in raster format and overlay this with a digital terrain model (GMTED2010) that should be able to find on the site usgs.gov.

Have also a look at the USGS long term archive (https://lta.cr.usgs.gov/). Lots of data freely available. I used for publications parts of the gtopo30 DEM model I downloaded a few years ago. It is in raster format and can easily be imported and processed in QGIS.
I'm doing a paper on an arctic-alpine plant species with habitat in Russia and North America, and this info is so helpful. Thanks to Phil for submitting the question, and all of you for the great resources. I'll try to come back and let you know which one was most useful for me.
