When you are asked to review a scientific article in your research field by a peer-reviewed scientific journal, "how long" do you spend on the review of two areas:
1. Your review of the paper (Title, Introduction, Methods, Results, Interpretation of Results, Conclusions, Further Direction or Future Challenges)?
2. Your review of the citations (Reference Section).

The time I spend reviewing depends on three factors:
1. My knowledge of the field: determines the time I will spend reading previous studies.
2. The nature of the paper: review articles tend to be more demanding.
3. The length of the paper and number of references.
Here's how I break out my time
Initial reading - 10 minutes
Background study - range from 20 minutes to 3 hours
Second reading - highlighting areas of concern range from 20 minutes to 1 hour
References - checking consistency - 5 minutes (verifying if cited correctly is part of second reading)
Third reading - writing review - 20 minutes
