I think it depends on the expertise and management skills of the supervisor. How a supervisor allots his time to his research students is his own private matter. Different supervisors may have different capacities and time allotment styles.
Most of supervisors would like to treat his research students equally. There may also be some variations depending on how sincere a research student is.
In our laboratory , my supervisor will allocate several research group with the same interest with one group leader.Every week this small group will have a common timetable to sit down and discuss about research progress.
I think it depends on the expertise and management skills of the supervisor.
Separate TASK may be given to them. Along with separate time slot.
I give time to few groups in morning before lectures, and for few groups after lecture. The time table for time allotment is FIXed for that students groups. If he missed that slot then He has to wait for next common free slot .
I believe that some fairness should be ensured, in order to provide all students with the attention they need, but also to avoid a situation where some may monopolize the supervisor. It seems a rather difficult balance, but it can be achieved by establishing some basic rules.
Haahahahha...................truly it all depends on research students seriousness, involvement, work nature and commitment in the research. Research guide is super smart than students. He knows very well how is the research student. Where as it is smartness of the student to attract the guide for his work and make more involvement of the research guide. In some cases there may be variation in nature of research supervisor with respects to the nature of students , information of the students, other students nature in the same guide, others like say caste, promotion competitions and many more. At the end I will say only one thing: Its truly the smartness of the students to make research supervisor in favor of our self. ...................best luck.
It is very much possible with effective communication system. One to one interaction has to be properly scheduled based on their progress in work, otherwise most of the clarification and suggestions can be done through e-mail
As needed, as long as complying with regulations. I tend to meet all of them on the same day of the week, a 'research day', and I stay with each as long as necessary, sometimes rescheduling a second weekly meeting, if needed.
A scheduled timetable helps like 'research day' and a timeline or gantt chart is good to ensure each students performance. I tend to agree that duration of meetings depends on the progress and needs of the students. At the same time students must also be responsible to report progress to supervisor as you are focus to one person, but supervisors has many students to tend to.
