I guess that one acquires this trait when one feels the need to share knowledge with the academic community in his specific field.
The development of research skills is the outcome of a culture cultivating research in a scholarly environment; mentoring, facilities and training are needed to enhance such process. I think your question is similar to "what are the traits to become a successful cardiac surgeon- primary school, secondary school, etc." Will we ask such question? I believe even research is much more challenging than the example I mentioned.
When you publish your first paper with your Master's, MPhil, or PhD supervisor or other peers and understand what it takes to do the research and publish, then you begin to gain confidence about becoming a productive researcher.

The traits rather starts early in one’s academic development in primary school. The passion for research is planted as it were, through small childrens’ projects aimed at solving minial problems at school and in the society. Also, written reports and essays on thought provoking topics that addresses the concerns of society given as assignments in lower levels of education nurtures the trait of productive research in learners. Though the impacts are minimal, it paves the way later in life for more productive and far reaching research during Mphil and PhD levels of education. Best regards

When s/he starts thinking / doing the following:
The time depends on the inquisitiveness of the individual. A highly inquisitive child will develop the skills to become a good researcher very early on. These skills include imagination, creativity, observation, and interpretation. One can summarize these skills in the phrase "analysis and synthesis," namely, breaking something down into smaller components to investigate each on its own and then putting the results of each investigation together into a larger whole.
