When attempting an outside-out patch, why do some papers use a low- or no-Mg2+ solution?

I am planning to do some experiments with enucleated patches. In the methods section of Herman & Jahr, 2007, they pull the enucleated patches in an aCSF solution with no Mg2+ ( 5mM CaCl2 & 0 mM MgCl2).

What is the reason for using a no Mg2+ solution?

In the case of Herman and Jahr's paper, I believe they omitted Mg++ since they're trying to measure NMDAR currents in nucleated patches (Mg++ blocks the pore at typical holding potentials so it is often omitted). Labs measuring CNG currents in excised patches will omit divalents since those tend be minimally permeant through CNG channels. So, it depends if your channels need it, but I don't think that changing Mg++ or Ca++ concentration is a necessity for nucleated patches...
