I'm currently in the process of writing my PhD thesis in a physics field, what is the difference you found between a PhD thesis and journal papers? I understand PhD thesis need more background, and is much longer than a few journal papers. Also what are some useful tips of writing a PhD thesis?

A journal article focuses on novel research results while giving some idea of the theory and methods used to produce those results. Novel research is also the focus of a PhD dissertation, but you have more room to clarify your methods and approach. You can document the unique details of your research methods for future students and postdocs in your group so that "institutional knowledge" doesn't leave with you. For example, you could include a tutorial on a unique piece of software you used or wrote for your research.
Consider asking yourself the following questions while you plan and write your dissertation: “What would I have wanted to read five years ago? What would have helped me get my research started faster?”
