I have had really good results from working with Qualtrics (qualtrics.com). It's easy to create your survey in Qualtrics, they can (for about $7/response) get respondents for you that match the demographic profile you need (we got several hundred in about four days), and they can give you the results in Excel format (from which it's easy to convert into files for SPSS). RIT has a license with them -- you'd have to look into whether Swansea does too and, if not, what Qualtrics would charge.
We have used Checkbox for our online surveys, the advantage is that we purchased a server to run the survey platform, and thus we physically control access to the server (and its data) in Canada.
One of our concerns about online survey platforms such as SurveyMonkey and Qualtrics is that the servers are based in the US, and thus subject to US law. It's very unlikely, of course, but if a US court were to compel release of data, it would be that much more difficult for us to respond as non-US residents.
That's an interesting point, Michael. Is it the case that Candian courts cannot compel release of data? I imagine the Checkbox solution would be cheaper in the long run if you're collecting continuous data over time. In my work we typically only survey the respondents once, then download the results. I'll have to look into how long they keep the results on their servers too. Thanks.
This is really helpful. Thank-you. I have just found out that my university is going to use Qualtrics. Our licence for Survey Monkey was quite limited and we have exceeded what we have paid for. I will explore Checkbox too. Thanks
