The data was collected in the 2021 and 2022, reviewers suggested major adjustments, and after they were made there was no second response from the journal. The (unfinished) review process itself was (or has been?) long, and another effort to publish this same work would take a lot of time... and my main concern is time (it's been 3 years since the initial data collection). So obviously, I ask myself if this is worth the effort, as I know that it is not groundbreaking research, and my current research topics are different. At the same time, I believe that the stories we collected are worth sharing (ethnographic data, semi-structured interviews, four stories about four places). What would you do?
One must guess at the reasoning of these reviewers. What is the purpose of their not responding? I suspect they are trying to bury the research without suffering any hostile response. Their reasons for rejecting it are too complicated to put into words, not worth the effort.
Or is it simply neglect, they are too incompetent to follow a prescribed routine for review.
To test, formally and politely ask for an update on their review. If it is ignored or not taken seriously, you know whether the reaction is intentional.
Thank you L Kurt Engelhart , I have done that, I asked, and I am not considering this same journal anymore (they have had some reorganisation issues, which I believe is the reason behind all the delays).
I wonder if it is worth trying with another journal at this point and start from scratch after so long.
