I am working on an empirical analysis of the post-cold war international order from a multidimensional perspective, and I would like to capture the possible evolution of the "global system" and how countries fit into it. Some proxies would be i.e. Military expenditure, CO2 emissions, global inequality.
One other proxy could be the competitive business-power (mostly from German) versus the political-power (Anglo-Saxon group), similar to World War I & II and after, in which they emigrated to West more than Trans-pacific geography or other.

Apart from traditional neorealist indicators, like the relative distribution of material power (measured in economic & military terms, or purely in military terms) you could also look into the relative distribution of technological innovation indicators (e.g. number of patents applied and/or granted).
Thank you, Patrick, You have a very good point: the issue of technology. It would be great to have information about patents. The problem is that they are not available for many countries, in particular, developing ones. Probably exports of goods and services may be useful as a proxy of that. Rogelio - check Henry Kissinger's book WORLD ORDER to see what you can glean from it. My "guess" would be: (1) the volume of international trade; (2) the rate of international travel; (3) the volume of international financial transactions; (4) the extent of international armed conflict; (5) the extent of international diplomacy, and cooperation through international agencies (UN, WHO, etc.). There are probably other similar indices that scholars on international relations also track.

Apart from other people's ideas here, one interesting strategy would be to include some of the "soft-power" indicators. There is some good soft-power research out there, you should check for example the The Soft power 30 by Portland Communications.
