Im working on Numerical simulation of scour around the bridge pier , Numerical results shows the lot of discrepancy when compared with Experimental results, im wondering what would be the probable cause to above problem. please do help in understanding of this problem..
This is hard to figure out without having seen your simulation and experiment. Typical origins for discrepancies are:
- definition of boundary conditions, incl. load
- numerical resolution
- selection of material properties
- selection of numerical model
- scaling factor of experiment
- interpretation of experimental data
Probably, the list could go on..
Agree with Dr. Riess that many reason could contribute to the discrepancies found between experimental and numerical results. This class of numerical models is particularly challenging and I recommend validating the code first by analyzing problems of known solutions before modeling the experiment.
in modeling the experiment, you should also try to introduce one level of complexity at a time to understand the effect of each parameter on the response and identify any possible numerical issue.

let me brief you about my simulation and Experiment that may helpful in explaining above problem in much deeper perspective.
Experiment: We have here 20m(L)X0.9m(W)X1m(D) flume having workind section of about 10m. i have used ADV for collecting instantaneous velocity and to measure the scour i have used the Sonar Sensors.
CFD Modelling: i have used Ansys Fluent for the simulation of flow and applied Eulerian approach fro the scour simulation considering it as an two phase problem. k-w model is being used for the simulation of flow.
when i compare the velocity profiles & Scour depth for different flow i find discrepancy between the CFD and Experiment.
