I have been studied in grasslands a few years. lots of paper mentioned an abundance of plant species, which is really confusing to me to understand what is the best index to estimate the dominance of species in grasslands? Cover, density, or biomass?

Thinking about which one can be used in a uniform index to estimate and compare species even in different growth forms, such as tussock v.s. single erect, or prostrate.

Most of my colleagues prefer biomass than others. But given a plant community in grasslands is a multidimensional assemblage. At the population level, each species has cover, density, and biomass, as well as canopy height at vertical architecture. Could we integrate these index in a general one? and what ways would be appropriate?

Once we are considering a woody plant encroachment in grasslands, how do we compare the dominance between herbaceous and woody plant?

Is there any index has been discussed?

Any comments and help would be appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Maowei
