Non-carcinogenic health risk from was assessed using the hazard quotient (HQ) and total hazard index (THI) (USEPA 2000). HQ is the ratio of determined dose of a pollutant to a reference dose level. If THI and HQ are lower than 1, there is no risk when consuming the selected sampling material. BUT What will result when the THI (Total Hazard index) and the HQ (hazard quotient) in Health risk assessment exceeds the value of 1?

greater than 1 implies there is a health risk, but gives no quantification of probability or severity of adverse health outcome.
note that these indices are very dependent on the estimated reference dose level, usually determined by toxicology studies in animals and /or human epidemiology.
