I am testing a plant extract which has an essential oil components. previously investigators individually tested antimicrobial activity of its essential components and crude extracts. I want to know how much essential oil contributed to antimicrobial activity. in other words I want whether essential oil is a component of a crude extract.
You can use hydro-distillation or steam distillation for extraction of essential oils. Hexane and dichloromethane solvents can also be used but in this case since the oils are volatile they escape when you are concentrating using a rotory evaporator.
It depends on plant material, extraction procedure, solvents used. You can get response from your experiments by testing all possibilities and realizing phytochemical testing for the bioactive extracts.

My question can I expect the presence and activity of essential oils in crude hydro-alcoholic extract? I am now going through Noureddine Boulenouar recommendations and see what happens?
