Guided tours are part of world tourism and requires a combination of professional services provided by several tourism components. However, technology seems to compete with this product. What do you think?
the guides activity will increase but individual tourism will grow. Individuals or small groups of people participating at divers evens will take small tours to see the areas and meet locals.
guided tour is a service provided to the visitor by operators to arrange a local representative provide all information about an the amenity or site. this sure enhances the purpose of visit. but the improvement in technologies and availability of information in internet sources have made the people to know all about the site and visit the site. Any tourist from any part of the world can book his own needed requirements with no help from other due to the technological developments. The increase in crime rate globally no people is interested in engaging a unknown person included into their package hence there may be a decline in guided tours
I´m sure technologies won´t make decrease guided tours. P2P platforms might put in increasing contact tourist with locals. This could diverse the ways in guided tours, for example for especific purposes. In fact, current websites offer this service to meet locals´ knowledge with tourist interests.
I agree that technology can respond to many needs and can be an impact on classical guidance. But over time, the concept of guidance can be shaped. For example, I think that special interest guides will become popular in the world. I think that guides with special skills will serve small groups in a particilur areas. For example, on a difficult track, accompanied by a recreational activity or deeply interested in a historical structure. We can expand the concept of special interest guidance that requires special attention, skill and ability.
Technology should not be seen as a threat or a competing factor or something which will overtake the work of tour guides/guided tours particularly in developing economies. Probably, it should be seen as a compliment to each other. A guided tour, as a service, is provided by a professional tour operator to its visitors during the trip and on-site or at place of tourists interest. In the course of service provision, for example; history of the area and statistics etc., tour operators/tour guides may use technology in a form of recorded listening devices to tell you information about the site. This is manageable if you have a small group of visitors at a site r the number of devices is equal to number of visitor at a time. Visitors can be scattered at a place which is well demarcated or numbered and is technologically friendly site. However, such listening devices are programmed just to provide only that information which is recorded and cannot respond to some technical questions which visitors may have. This is where the skills, knowledge and expertise of guided tours are required. Tour guides are there to attend to such questions not programmed into listening devices, hence the number of guided tours and the services of tour guides will increasingly be needed in the world of tourism in future.
As far as I can see, most of you do refer to the technology as an ultimate way to further develop and utilize potential from tourism. Anyway, I would not agree since the human context of tourism you can not exclude. Or at least, we must strive to this.
And yes, technology helps us gather a remarkable amount of information, but it does not welcomes us on the reception, bring the bags in hotel room, have a loos chat with us, assist in any possible fashion etc. Let's avoid inception of technology in every single pore of our life. We can not resist it - that's clear, but let's use it sustainable fashion in a long run.
Thank you all for your comments. I think guiding tourists/visitors and interpreting attractions/objects/destinations will continue in future. However, the nature of the job seems to change. I am wondering tour guiding services in post-tourism destinations. When tour operators no more control big groups of visitors what will happen to group tours? In classical tourism tour operators sell guided tours in advance or during holiday. Are we nearing one-to-one private tour guiding more than before?
