The role of Forestry would continue to meet the society needs for fiber, foods, medicins derived from forests; as well as the services required by society. As population increases over time de demand for these goods and services would increase as well. Forests are finite, forest plantations and the discovery of other new sources of fiber would help but closely replace the goods and services provided by forests. The need for foresters that professionally manage our forest resources would continue to increase as demand increases.

There might be. But in 1972, I believe, the US government banned the cutting of first growth and other valuable sectors of the forests so that they could not be use here in the U.S., although they could be exported. Consequently, the U.S. could also import wood from global countries. In my view, this combined with the accelerated climate change leave little hope for forests in places we know them.

In the past, forestry focused on the demand and supply chain of forest products to fulfil the needs of people. Following this, awareness and recognition on the ecosystem services of forests called for conservation as well as restoration. Moreover, forestry become the global centre for carbon sequestration measures because of the functioning roles of forests and soil. For global economy, forests play for carbon market via carbon financing rather than the forest products and services including ecotourism.

If the plantations are limited for ecosystem services and ecological reasons, there will be consequently limited in raw material production from forests. Accordingly, foresters will stand as the officers to govern the forest production within the frame of policies, rules, regulation and standards very strictly.

For green economy, agroforestry as well as community forestry will become keys comparing to industrial plantation because these kinds of forests play for multipurpose such as basic needs, SME, carbon market, etc.

I think there is need to strike a balance between the productive roles and the environmental/ecological roles of forests because we need both. If this is done both those in production and environmental forestry will have nothing to lose and our environment will still be protected. I think what we should all speak and act against is the unsustainable exploitation of forests for economic reasons without considering the ecological implications.

There is an ever encreasing demand for forest bio-mass in one form or another. I feel with proper management this can be achived. That said everyone will have to do their part. No more not in my back yard mentality.

I suggest the following questions and research problems in the above topic:

How should the environmental policy change in order to stop the predatory exploitation of the Amazon rainforests?

What must change in economic policy to stop the predatory exploitation of the Amazon rainforests, i.e. the largest complex of natural forest ecosystems of forest environments, in addition characterized by the greatest biogeographical biodiversity of flora and fauna?

Forestry can have a strong future, one that provides good jobs, benefits our communities, sustains the environment, and brings opportunities to the next generation. But this future will only come about if we make the right choices, adopt strong policies and put them into action.

Forestry is one of the most important sectors of the Canadian economy, shapes many of our communities and affects a wide and diverse range of stakeholders. Important policy decisions affect forestry, and workers need to ensure their views and heard, and their interests are represented.

Regarding Darius request, from technical point of view it's "easy". First, the greatest consumers must only import certified timber and subproducts. Second, promote the establishment of highly productive forest exploitations. Third, the timber producers and the processing industry must work together, with the same objectives, based in productivity and sustainable exploitation of both natural and artificial plantations. Four, protect the equilibrium of natural stands.

From the political point of view is probably not so simple.
