when we search literature we failed to have a clear cut information on which was the right expression we can use for seasonal increase in seedlings growth , is it mean increase in seedlings length or mean increase in seedlings high.many researchers insist that it was represent increase in plant high , whereas others considered this increase represent increase in plant length according to its growth angle which was less than 90 degree,so that i need your assistant in giving me a clear cut answer supported with related research papers.
I use length for plants that are not able to stand upright (creeping herbs, epiphytes that are pendulous, lianas) while height is what I use for plants that support themselves without help.
i think that plant high refers to the distance between soil surface and the top of the plant, and plant lenght apply to the total distance from root axes to shoot axes.
For seedlings usually : seedling length & for plants : plant height. Then comes next question which is seedling & which is plant. age matters
There are 4 major life forms of plants : trees, herbs, shrubs and climbers (vines and lianas).
Herbs as name implies are herbaceous. Vines are herbaceous climbers.
Shrubs, Lianas (woody climbers) and Trees are woody.
Plant with distinct trunk ( at least measuring 3 m from ground level) are classified as trees.
Shrubs are usually have clumpy growth (all stems are arising from base of the stem which mostly never beyond 1 m).

The decision is based on concepts of plant growth and development. Understanding both concepts you can decide about the best measure for your problem. In my opinion, stages of development and dry biomass are the best. See my papers on Researchgate.

I agree with Carneiro. Any how you may measure the principal shoot with a line. It,s tedious if need measure several plants, but it works from my point view.
