But how do you know that mammals actually evolved from fish? Remember evolution is only a theory and no one has observed species changing into new ones. Is it good to have such an underlying assumption in your study? Fish photoreceptors are perfect for their environment as are mammalian pinealocytes for theirs. So imo there has been no actual 'regression' lol :)
Well, all of us know that the mammalian pineal has evolved from photoreceptive pineal of lower vertebrates, and there should not be any confusion about it. If this is true, then it is also true that mammalian pineal lost its capability to detect light directly. Therefore, some one should explain why it should not be treated as retrogressive evolution in terms of photo reception.
No-one actually KNOWS evolution happened; they BELIEVE (or infer that) it happened, because the process was not actually observed firsthand. It is also incorrect say 'ALL of us KNOW...' because I myself (and others) don't hold those beliefs. :)
