In research, in order to track battery SOC, we often use different techniques like Coulomb Counting, OCV, Kalman filter etc. However, what types of algorithm and techniques does commercial battery company use ? Say the SOC tracking system in our smart phone display or EV display. I initially searched in the google and in different platforms but as expected the companies do not make the technical details public. I do not need the technical specifics. I just want to know the type of tracking algorithms (just the names) that are commercially used.
In general, industrial companies want a reliable, robust, and cheap method for determining the SoC with a reasonable accuracy. That is why I am fairly confident that most companies stick to a voltage-based method (OCV if you want to call it that), and this perhaps in combination with some Coulomb counting method. I would be surprised if companies went any further than that. Perhaps for EV's they do.. but I think it is probably still just a lookup table with perhaps some modifiers to account for ageing. Considering that Ford recommends me to charge my Mach-E EV (LFP cells) upto 100% every month or so for reliable SoC tracking, I don't think there is much more to it than OCV + Coulomb counting. This is my 2 cents. I have no experience in a commercial company on the matter, I just did a thesis on SoC monitoring and worked in a battery research group for a couple of years (5 years ago).
