Make it fun. We did this by engaging with our students as colleagues, mostly by introducing them to meaningful research, recruiting them as researchers, and then giving them ownership of their work regardless of outcome. Subsequently our undergraduates were presenting posters and abstracts at conferences and interacting with other researchers at a professional level. They learned what it was like to be fully engaged in research, and many used this research experience to help get into graduate school and make careers for themselves in research. My profile (see Conference Papers, Presentations, Posters, Cover Letters) has many examples. This effort was funded by NSF TCUP (5 yrs), NSF PEEC (5 yrs), NSF EPSCoR R2 T1 (5 yrs), and USDA NIFA Tribal College Equity awards and produced two NSF Graduate Research Fellows.
