Am doing a research on surface water quality. Am trying to analysis the water for multi purpose uses like recreation, fishing, bathing and boating. But am not able to get water quality standards for different parameters(physical, chemical and biological) which will compare with the result I get.
In the US, each state will set WQS for various uses of the waterway. Looking at a State's standards will show different criteria depending on use, location, and so on. But, WQS are political and are often set/modified based on that process rather than strictly a science-based risk assessment (which can get political too when you define risk level). Recently, one state tried to set stringent levels of toxics in fish because certain communities consumed large amounts of fish. But, to do so would put strict controls on some major dischargers (high cost) so the strict standards were over-ruled. You should be able to find standards, but they will vary as each jurisdiction applies its values.

When you considering the water quality standards there is no standards for ground and surface water but there are standards for several purposes such as drinking, recreational, aquatic and livestock. Better to see WHO guideline values for drinking and there are some guidelines for other purposes also. Hope following articles will help your study,

you can use the standards recommended by seq-water, you also need to know what this water is for . good luck
For international reference follow the USEPA guidelines. For national reference follow the CPCB standards but CPCB is not sufficient.
Rather than use the USEPA standards, use them as a starting point. Then, if you can find an area in the US (or other country (developed?) where there are similar water uses look at the State standards. At least in the US, State's can have more restrictive standards. For example, in some areas, there is a significant subsistence consumption of fish. Locally, the WQS may be more restrictive because the bioaccumulative chemicals have a greater impact when more fish are eaten. Often, nationwide concerns (politics) may trump local needs and this will be reflected in Standards.
The Water quality standard for different countries is different. However WHO 2011 has laid down some revised permissible limit of various element in water.
