Nitrite is occasionally very important as an ozone scavenger. Carbonate is mostly significant because it is a hydroxyl radical scavenger.

Ozonation process is highly dependent on pH during ozonation. Ozone reactions in water devided into direct reactions with molecular ozone O3 and indirect reactions by ozone hydrolysis products such as (hydroxyl radical, hydroxyl ion). Direct reactions are predominant reactions in low pH. While at high pH, hydroxyl radical and ion are the predominant reactions. Carbonates, phosphates, and sulphates are ozone scavengers.

If ozone used for drinking water treatment, it is not recommended at high bromide levels.
