Cross functional team is a group of people with different backgrounds, expertise, age, gender, ethnicity, functions and more that are working toward shared objectives. Are there any qualities for leaders of this team,? Also, can cross functional teams replace traditional functional teams?
A person who has the ability to think and take correct decisions at suitable time and and critical points should have the qualifications to be the leader of any group
Perhaps a facility for recognizing important linkages / complementarities between people of different skillsets (e.g. to know how to assign different team members to different objectives)? Also the ability to recognize when leadership needs to come from someone on his/her team, rather than the leader - due to the qualities & skillsets of different team members.

Qualities of a leader in cross functional group need to include:
Ability to determine clear, objective and achievable organisational goals (Basically quantified).
Respect and progressive views about different cultural groups.
Ability to recognize / determine the right men for the right jobs on the basis of their skills rather than similarities /differences.
Ability to resolve Conflict due to inevitable (sometimes) conflict within such a group/team.
Ability to create a sense of belonging within the group/ team members.
Being fair and just to all the members.
I feel that having a cross functional team or traditional functional team depends on the problem! Issues of daily routine matters may be dealt with a traditional functional team. In the case of complex, changing, multiple and global issues concerning people from different ethnicity/cultural groups cross functional teams may be better.
The leadership style to follow can be the Democratic Participatory Style in a new team / group to create a sense of belongingness and Free-Rein Style in case of a well established team.
