I am seeking to compare assessment test scores from a standard exam in US history at two different types of universities. The goal is to see which type of university produces the highest test scores.

Should be able to use a standard independent samples t-test here.
Computing a t-value then seeing it's p-value will allow you to test the probability that the two sets of test scores come from populations with equivalent means.
