In this network, segments are used for routing; that's why there is a central controller that supervises; it becomes a central system; that's why the structure of the extensive SDN network suffers; it can be said that the SDN network is suitable for small networks.
I suggest looking at this recently published paper on the experiences of rolling out an SDN network and then having to redefine and deploy and new architecture. Some key things you have to look out for is the amount of automation you need the direction and quantity of traffic flows. Changes in traffic flow necessitated a change in the SDN implementation.
