A friend once described transfer as the ability to take what one has learned and apply it in a new setting.

He similarly described this a very, very hard to achieve.  He described this as the Holy Grail of education.  His claim was the best strategy he could find in the literature at the time was multiple representations.  That is, representing problems in as many ways as possible:  Diagrams, graphs, values, concept maps, algebraic representations where appropriate . . ..
