For years I have written out diagrams of my notes on samurai and martial lineages, and in striving for a more paper free work space (and one that can be stored in the cloud for accessibility), I am on the hunt for genealogy software that can enable this interest.
I'm looking for the ability to:
- Document individuals birth-death dates,
- Document their specialties (ie. swordsmanship, spearmanship, gunnery, etc.),
- Document any martial traditions that the individual either participated in or founded (ie. Shinkage-ryu, Yoshin-ryu, etc.)
- A reporting system that allows for PDF creation and customization fields (notes under the entries name).
This seems pretty specialized and I suspect that I'll have to resort back to using Microsoft Word or Photoshop, but I might as well look. What do those in genealogical research use?
I have mostly used Progeny (www.progeny.com). It is specific to disease pedigrees, but does allow for customization and some notes, but it may not allow for as much notation as you need. However, you could probably set something up with the legend and symbols to represent certain categories (specialities/martial traditions). Most of the issues I have found with Progeny have been when the pedigree is very large (over 300 individuals/more than 5 generations). It is available in Cloud format and you can try it online to see if it would work for your needs. You can also save a PDF version of the pedigree.
if you look for customisation, my suggestion would be to look at some of the open source solutions. A well known genealogy software is for example gramps. If you contact them, they may be able to give you more information on how to customize it.
Commercial and cloud solutions often limit you to a few hundred individuals in their free version. If you need more you can of course buy it. From my experience they are not customisable at all.
In response to the earlier answer: 300 individuals is not considered very large at all for this type of software. I have seen databases up to 10.000 or even 100.000 individuals being tracked over 15 to 20 generations.
