Your parents and grandparents will never admit that they are racists. Do you continue to talk with them? Do you break off all ties with them. Do you discuss these issues with them in front of your children or only in private.

By “racist” do you mean your grandparents march shouting, “you will not replace us,” or they have qualms with affirmative action policies? I ask mainly to add perspective. Honestly, I don’t feel your answer matters. Sometimes we hold beliefs so strongly we can’t fathom anyone could think differently and be a good person or worthy of our love. Consider the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, who murdered and maimed dozens of people to promote an anti-technology ideology. His brother David suspected him and let the authorities know, but also sought to protect his brother from the death penalty. David loves his brother despite his crimes. Afterall, love that’s contingent on being a “good person” isn’t really love. I hope you’ll consider being open to your grandparents, Joseph, even if they’re not always as good as you would hope. ~ Kevin
Racism is a long term condition that can only be managed by individual self.
You can not change parents or grand parents attitude, however you can be non-follower yourself.
Challenging them may add to the existing problem too.

My parents and grandparents were probably most polite. It was a hypothetical example. However, what if the parents and grandparents insist that they are not racists and are extremely offended by your false accusations? That is the crux of the problem.

My parents and grandparents would be okay if the accusations were true. The problem is that they feel they have been FALSELY accused. It is the unfairness of the accusations that they protest.

They insist that they are not racists. Who am I to take the high moral ground and accuse them in such a terrible manner? What arrogance on my part!!!!
The food of the others may smell funny. I do not like their music. Is this enough to qualify me to be a racist?

You might find the Social Psychology concept of, “modern racism” useful – combining traditionally racist beliefs with the belief it’s wrong to be racist. Your family might watch the film Zootopia together to bring children into the conversation. It’s a nice opportunity to discuss prejudice, how even well-meaning persons never fully avoid stereotyping, and how even those who seem “backwards” can change and aren’t necessarily so bad at their cores. You also may find psychology research on what reduces prejudice helpful, such as the contact hypothesis. Merely getting hypothetical grandparents to have interactions with those of another race may do wonders in changing attitudes. Hope this helps some, Joseph. ~ Kevin
