Waste Marble powder particles if used as partial replacement of sand or cement enhance the density of the cementitious materials but on the other hand they decrease its compressive strength.
marble is metamorfic carbonate of calcium , isn’t a binder . The shape of marble‘s particles is irregular, not rounded and totally inert even if pH of Portland cement during hydration process is quite high. You can easily understand that substituting marble for cement you put in the system a heavy filler , that is scattered and irregular about shape of grains (increasing of density) but remains totally non reactive (reduction of strength development because there is lack of binding material ). There are tons of partially or totally reactive fillers that is better to use. Normally Cem II (42,5 R LL) are cut with calcium carbonate because is cheap raw material not for substituting clinker. All pozzolanic cement , follows this way of cutting but using correct by products like GGBS, fly ash, microsilica and so on. In those cases clinker can be reduced but final strength remains in the range of 42,5 R level.
For more informations about all types of pozzolanic Portland cements have a look at EN 196 and EN 197 , European Norm .
