I agree with you all for that matter..but sometimes because of huge patient rush, and busy teaching schedule, sometimes you are left with inadequate research time..and just giving emphasis on the publications is not fair..
I agree with you and according to the very busy schedule for clinical academic, any achievements such as finding the novel way to cure, even finding the effective patterns and ..... must be considered and not only focus on publication!
The role of faculty in teaching medical Institutes is being involved in patient care , teaching undergraduate & postgraduate students & doing research by publishing articles . It is easier to measure research by evaluating their publications , but difficult to measure teaching & care of patients by their professional skills , unless a feedback is available from students & other faculty members . An effective criteria for promotion should be based on three factors of research , teaching & service to patients .
Each faculty has their own requirements and criteria based on their eventual aims/goals and visions. There is no right or wrong answer. The leadership has to set a direction and you as a faculty member has to decide if that aligns with your values and beliefs. Some institutions have promotions that are both time based and based on other criteria such as number and impact of publication. Some are leaning towards pure academia, while others have a clinical component. Key question if the institution is aligned with your mission and goals. The key question to happiness , in which most management books will tell you, are the relationships that you have fostered with your superiors, peers and subordinates.
