This is an interesting question. After observing the response rate of other on-line surveys, it seems like an unsubsidized response rate between 2 and 5 percent is common. We have found ways to increase the response rate by how we send the surveys. For example, we have a much higher response rate when we send individual e-mails with the respondent’s name included in a mail merge type of format. That helps getting through some filters; it also helps to avoid certain words especially in the subject line and in the text. Moreover, many respondents can see part of the first line of text, so it seems important to have the respondent’s name and key words in the first line of text.

I suspect you may already know many of these things with a response rate of 7 percent in three weeks, which is amazing unless the respondents know you or you are taking full advantage of some techniques like mentioned above. When we really push the limits, we have had some exceed that.  Once again, this is when no prior relationship exists and in an unsubsidized survey.
